Marshmallow Test

One marshmallow now, or two later? A simple test for 4-year-olds that predicted their future success.

Methodology

Setup: • 4-year-olds alone in room • Treat on table • "If you wait 15 mins, you get two" Secretly filmed

Findings

⏱️ Wait Time: • 1/3 ate immediately • 1/3 waited 15 mins • Avg: 6 mins Prediction (Original): • High delayers had higher SAT scores, better BMI, lower drug use ️ 2018 Re-study: • Found correlation much weaker • Economic background was key factor (Trust issues)

Significance

Self-Control: • Willpower is important but context/trust matters • "Environment shapes willpower"
