Personality

Trait Theory

Personality is a combination of stable traits

Gordon Allport pioneered this approach. Personality is explained through consistent, enduring 'traits.' Allport's trait hierarchy: 1. Cardinal traits: Dominate entire life (rare) 2. Central traits: 5-10 core characteristics 3. Secondary traits: Appear in specific situations Raymond Cattell: Factor analysis yielded 16 Personality Factors (16PF) Hans Eysenck: 3-dimensional model: Extraversion, Neuroticism, Psychoticism Modern: Big Five (OCEAN) The most scientifically validated trait model Strengths of trait theory: Measurable, predictive Limitation: May underestimate situational influences
