Bystander Effect

Why no one helps when everyone is watching

Inspired by the 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese, where it was reported that witnesses did nothing. Psychologists Darley and Latané found that the presence of others inhibits helping behavior. - Alone: 85% helped - With 4 others: Only 31% helped Reasons: 1. Diffusion of Responsibility: "Someone else will do it." 2. Pluralistic Ignorance: "No one else is reacting, so it must not be a big deal." If you need help, point to a specific person: "You in the blue shirt, call 911!"
